October marks Black History Month

October is Black History Month in the UK. This year's theme is “Standing Firm in Power and Pride” to highlight the determination, strength and dedication of Black people worldwide.

This year's theme

The theme of “Standing Firm in Power and Pride” emphasises the substantial contributions that Black people give to society. This includes prominent individuals such as activists, leaders and innovators who have influenced the past, while also defining the future.

At the centre of this theme are two values: power and pride. Power signifies the leadership, impact and ability to create positive change. Pride shows the cultural identity, tradition and Black excellence. Together, these represent the unity, power, and determination of the Black community.

The significance of Black History Month

The first Black History Month in the UK was in 1987. October was chosen as it is customary for African leaders to speak about important matters in this month. Black History Month allows everyone to participate in honouring and learning about Black heritage and culture. Though Black individuals have played a crucial part in British history and shaping its present society, this is often unnoticed.
